Macy’s – A Rich History

In 1858 Roland H Macy opened his first Macy’s store in New York City as a dry goods store.  His first day sales reached a whopping $11.06.  But from these humble beginnings grew one of the largest retail stores in history. In 1902 Macy’s moved to Herald Square in New York City.

It was at the location of Herald Square that everything seemed to take off. Macy’s Herald Square store was the first building in the world to have the modern day escalator. The wooden escalators are still in use today!  This location has become the flagship of Macy’s Department stores. The building’s 2.2 million square feet made it the world’s largest department store from 1924 until 2009.Then the South Korean chain Shinsegae opened a store of nearly 3.16 million square feet in Busan. It is estimated 20 million shoppers visit Macy’s Herald Square over the course of each year. An estimated 7,000 people view the display windows at Macy’s Herald Square each hour.
